We love the natural and invigorating scent of an essential oil filling the home as it is diffused, but another benefit of essential oils is the creative capacity of blending your own combinations to express your personality. There are a few principles to learn before becoming an excellent scent crafter in our article on How to Create a Good Essential Oil Blend for Christmas or Any Occasion.

Scents are classified in three categories: Base notes, middle notes and top notes. A base note diffused alone may not be the first thing you notice when you enter a room. It lingers darkly but ever present and stays with you for awhile in departure. Base notes tend to be grounding, focusing. A few examples of base notes are cedarwood, patchouli or sandalwood.

Top notes are loud and volatile. They are the first thing you notice, but they also quickly dissipate. They are usually energizing and exciting. Some examples of top notes are lemon, orange or peppermint.

Middle notes of course are between the two extremes. They tend to be more calming. Some examples are lavender, spearmint or tea tree.

Use a base note alone, or a blend of base notes, if you want a subtle scent that blends into the environment. A top note alone may be energizing for house cleaning day. A middle note alone is often used to relax before bedtime.

To make a full-bodied blend  for Christmas or any occasion start with about six drops of a base note, three middle notes and one top note. A middle and top note blend of eight drops and two drops respectively will be calming and sweet or reverse the proportions to use more top note to create an energetic atmosphere. Be creative and use variety. Some may enjoy keeping a notebook of the blends they really enjoy.

Here are a few examples from our Christmas collection:

Kings’ Blend: 6 drops Frankincense, 3 drops Siberian Fir Needle and 1 drop Orange.

Christmas Cookie: 7 drops Cinnamon and three drops of Orange.

Starry Night: 8 drops Frankincense, one Drop Siberian Fir Needle and one drop Cinnamon.

Candy Cane: 2 drops of Siberian Fir Needle and 8 drops of Peppermint
